Personal Requirements
An architectural designer is in charge of creating plans and envisioning changes for the interior of a house. A person who loves to draw, plan, and create is greatly suited for a career in architecture design. Great drawing skills are not required, but the knowledge of basic drawing and a desire to apply those skills is a must. Self-motivation is also a great asset. Being able to take initiative, make changes, and talk to others who need information will help you greatly as you work your way into interior architectural design.
Educational Requirements
Becoming an architectural designer is a profession in which you need to meet certain educational requirements. These requirements are set to make sure that people who are only licensed designers have the ability to work on projects. A degree in Architectural Design from a trade school or a university is your first step in starting your career in architectural design.
Most employers will only look at those candidates who have a college degree and have been trained in drafting, drawing, interior construction, knowledge of heating and plumbing principles, roofing, basic construction, and several other specific, job-related topics.
Specialized Knowledge
Other than the educational requirements, if you are looking into a career as an architectural designer you will need to become familiar with the universal software program of all architects: CADD. The Computer-Aided Design and Drafting software is the way that all designers and architects create blueprints of their plans. It also allows the architectural designer to make any changes to the design so they can lend their input to any remodeling or structural changes.
Securing a Job
Like most professional jobs that require licensing, getting your foot in the door with an architectural or construction firm will require you to endure a term as journeyman. This usually lasts for a few years and can sometimes be done while still in school as an intern. After you complete this requirement, an entry-level position is the next step. After you have gained enough experience in designing and working with contractors and other interior designers, you have other opportunities to advance.
Job Outlook
Current job boards are full of firms who have several openings for architectural designers. However, it must be noted that with the current economy, the extended forecast is that these openings will slow down considerably. Right now, people are opting to remodel their homes instead of having new ones built. This is still a great area for architectural designers, but when the current positions are filled, these opportunities are going to few and far between.
